Dr. Zohra A. Ahsan, a pediatrician registered with the CPSO, and her team care for your baby from the first consultation to the final check. Dr. Ahsan is experienced in newborn circumcision and performs the procedure regularly at our clinic.
One price, everything included
$500 covers two consultations, the procedure and follow-up visits. There are no surprise fees.

Appointments are usually available within 1 week. We book procedures on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so your doctor is here for you the next day.
With you through healing
We check your baby before you go home. If anything worries you the next day, call, text or WhatsApp us and we'll check on your baby.
Preparing for the procedure
A little preparation helps the visit go smoothly.
- has a family history of bleeding or clotting problems
- was born early, has jaundice, is unwell or is not feeding well
- did not receive the vitamin K injection at birth
- was told there is anything unusual about his penis (for example, the opening is not at the tip)
- Feed your baby about 1 hour before your appointment, unless we tell you otherwise.
- Dress him in loose, comfortable clothing that opens easily.
- Plan to stay a short while afterward so we can check for bleeding before you go home.
- Extra diapers, wipes and a warm blanket
- Petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline)
- No pain medicine needed: we prescribe infant Tylenol for home
- Your baby’s health card and your photo ID

A parent or legal guardian will be asked to sign a consent form. Please ask your doctor any questions before the procedure begins.
Healing at a glance
- Leave the gauze on for 24 hours.
- Petroleum jelly after every bath and diaper change.
- Acetaminophen for pain, as instructed.

How healing looks
After the procedure, your doctor places a lubricated gauze dressing on the penis so it does not stick to the head. It usually falls off on its own within 24 hours.
Healing happens in stages and every baby is different. It can take up to a month for the penis to look fully healed.
Bleeding
The cut edges close up and bleeding stops within minutes to a day.Colour changes
At first the head may look red, glossy or even purple. The skin there thickens and darkens once it is exposed. Off-white or yellowish patches in the first few days are a type of scab. At days 2–3 the skin may look green or yellow. This is normal healing, not pus.Swelling
Swelling behind or under the head of the penis can look like a blister. It is another sign of healing and goes away within 1–2 weeks.Size
The penis may look smaller. This is mostly because the surrounding skin is now relaxed.Fussiness
Babies may cry more, sleep less or feed poorly for a few hours. This usually lasts no more than a couple of days.Caring for your baby at home
- Leave the dressing on for 24 hoursLet the gauze fall off by itself unless told to remove it. If it is still on after 24 hours, soak it off in the bath. Some discolouration, drops of blood and bits of skin at the tip are normal.
- Check for bleedingFor the first 24 hours, check at every diaper change. Spots of blood no bigger than a two-dollar coin (about 1 inch) are normal. See a doctor if there is more.
- Point the penis upPosition the penis pointing up in the diaper to ease swelling behind the head.
- Warm bath every day for 1 weekDaily warm baths keep the area clean and help the dressing come off.
- Apply petroleum jellyPut a barrier ointment such as Vaseline on the end of the penis after every bath and at every diaper change until fully healed. It stops the penis sticking to the diaper.
- Keep the skin in positionFrom day 2, as swelling goes down, gently push the penile skin down, away from the head of the penis (glans), if it has moved up. This helps it heal in the right place, just behind the rim of the glans.

Pain relief
A numbing injection (nerve block) given during the procedure keeps your baby comfortable for the first few hours. After that, give the infant Tylenol we prescribe, exactly as directed. Signs of pain include crying and trouble sleeping or feeding.
- Heavy bleeding: small pools of blood, or spots bigger than a two-dollar coin on the diaper
- Redness spreading to the belly or legs
- Fever
- Poor feeding and/or vomiting
- Yellow fluid draining from the incision
- Trouble peeing, such as diapers less wet than usual

How much does newborn circumcision cost at Aafiyat Medical Centre?
$500, all-inclusive. The fee covers two consultations, the procedure and follow-up care. The ZCan Pharmacy circumcision care kit is sold separately.
Is newborn circumcision covered by OHIP?
No. Routine newborn circumcision is not covered by OHIP in Ontario, so there is a fee for the service.
Up to what age can my baby be circumcised here?
We perform newborn circumcision for baby boys up to 2 months old. Babies between 2 and 3 months old need an assessment at the clinic first.
