Short answer: In Ontario, homeopathy is a regulated health profession, and only members of the College of Homeopaths of Ontario can call themselves homeopaths. A first visit is a detailed conversation about your health, and remedies are licensed by Health Canada as natural health products. Homeopathy should be used alongside your medical care, not instead of it.
Is homeopathy regulated in Ontario?
Yes. Since April 1, 2015, homeopathy has been regulated in Ontario under the Homeopathy Act, 2007. The College of Homeopaths of Ontario sets standards for its members and handles complaints. Only College members may use the title “homeopath” in Ontario.
You can check that a homeopath is registered by searching their name in the College’s “Find a Homeopath” public register at collegeofhomeopaths.com.
What happens at a first visit?
A first homeopathic consultation is usually longer than a typical doctor’s visit. Your homeopath will ask about:
- The concern that brought you in, and how it affects your day
- Your general health, sleep, energy, digestion and mood
- Your lifestyle, diet and stress
- Your medical history, and the medicines and supplements you take
Based on this, your homeopath recommends an individualized plan, which may include remedies and lifestyle guidance, and follows up with you over time.
How are homeopathic remedies regulated?
In Canada, homeopathic remedies are licensed by Health Canada as natural health products. A licensed product has an eight-digit number on the label, starting with “NPN” or “DIN-HM”. A licence means the product meets Health Canada’s rules for quality and labelling; it does not mean the product has been proven to work for a particular condition. You can look up a product in Health Canada’s Licensed Natural Health Products Database.
Using homeopathy safely alongside medical care
- Keep taking your prescribed medicines. Do not stop or change a prescription without talking to the doctor who prescribed it.
- Tell everyone what you take. Let both your doctor and your homeopath know about all your medicines, remedies and supplements.
- Keep up with vaccines. Health Canada requires homeopathic “nosode” products to state that they are neither a vaccine nor an alternative to vaccination.
- See a doctor for new, severe or worsening symptoms, or symptoms that do not improve. In an emergency, call 911.
Is it covered?
Homeopathy is not covered by OHIP. Some extended health and workplace benefit plans cover visits with a registered homeopath, so check your plan.
